VERY EARLY WARD LOCK GUIDE - WYE VALLEY - 1909 - RARE!

This very early Ward Lock & Co illustrated travel guide is one of the original editions of the "red" guides published between 1901 and 1910.  These were the first of those with the famous "coat of arms" design on the cover and with the 1/- net price at the top of the spine, leading to the guides becoming known as the "shilling" guides.  They are full of contemporary photographs, advertisements and fold-out maps.

This particular guide dates from 1909/10.  5th edition revised.  Details as follows :

Area covered : The Valley of the Wye.

Contents : 128 pages of text.  3 fold-out maps (all present).  Over 60 illustrations.  90 pages of wonderful old contemporary advertisements.

Overall condition : Very good.

Maps :  Excellent.  All the fold-out maps are present and undamaged.

Covers : Very good, with normal wear and slight rubbing to the edges.

Spine : Very good, with normal wear and some creasing.  Slight rubbing to top and bottom edges, and a small (1.5cm) split at edge of foot of cloth.

Binding : Very good.  Crack inside rear cover.

Pages : Very good with less than average wear.  Slight discolouration at edges.
