This very early Ward Lock & Co illustrated travel guide is one of the original editions of the "red" guides published between 1910 and 1918. These were the first of those with the famous "coat of arms" design on the cover and with the 1/- net price at the top of the spine, leading to the guides becoming known as the "shilling" guides. They are full of contemporary photographs, advertisements and fold-out maps. These guides are increasingly becoming collectors' items. I have a large collection of these early guides, but am needing to sell a number because of lack of space to store them. This particular guide dates from 1913/14, 5th edition revised. Details as follows : Area covered : Oban, including Fort William, the Caledonian Canal, Iona, Staffa and the Western Highlands of Scotland. Contents : 144 pages of text. 4 fold-out maps (1 missing) and 40 illustrations. The advertisements at the end of the guide have been removed. Overall condition : Good, but worn. Maps : One of the fold-out maps is missing. The others are in excellent condition - present and complete. Covers : Good, but rather worn and with some superficial marking. Some creasing to the corners. Spine : Good, but again rather worn and rubbed. Small tear to cloth (no loss). Binding : Binding of text block is good, but covers (with spine cloth and first few introductory pages attached) have separated from the binding itself - could be easily reglued. Pages : Very good. Normal wear. Discolouration and wear at edges. Small tear to title page.
