VERY EARLY WARD LOCK GUIDE - ISLE OF WIGHT 1910 - RARE!

This very early Ward Lock & Co illustrated travel guide is one of the original editions of the "red" guides published between 1910 and 1918.  These were the first of those with the famous "coat of arms" design on the cover and with the 1/- net price at the top of the spine, leading to the guides becoming known as the "shilling" guides.  They are full of contemporary photographs, advertisements and fold-out maps.

This particular guide dates from 1910/11, 17th edition revised.  Details as follows :

Area covered : The Isle of Wight, including Cowes, Newport, Ryde, Sandown, Shanklin, Ventnor, Yarmouth and all other towns and areas of the island.

Contents : 160 pages of text, plus 90 pages of fascinating old advertisements.  5 fold-out maps (1 missing), a sketch plan and over 90 illustrations.

Overall condition : Very good.

Maps :  One map is missing.  All the others are present and complete, with no damage.

Covers : Very good, but with some wear and slightly grubby.   Faint crease to front cover. Slight bumping to the edges.

Spine :  Very good - just rather worn and again grubby.  No marks or damage.

Binding : Very good - slight crack inside front cover.

Pages : Very good.  Normal wear. Discolouration at edges.

Other : Small pencil inscription inside front cover.
