…amongst others and by many European magazines The Reviews ![]() 0.5 meter pair of VdH D102 MKIII cables. Audio file
"Having used a pair for more
than six months in various systems which included mid-priced sources and
amplifications to high-end components, I found the
102s to be neutral without emphasis on any specific spectrum of the
audio bandwidth. It provided a fairly honest view of your source components
in comparison with the legendary Monster M1000 Mk3 interconnects, which sets a solid bass foundation
to your music, the 102 prefers to carefully balance both frequency
extremes.
In terms of character, it had
more "body" than my reference Kimber PBJ interconnects and proved to be friendly with
valve components. Used between pre and power amplifiers, it retained a sense of
air and detail with much confidence while stereo imaging was very well handled.
I know Shah doesn't have many happy memories of VdH's
The First interconnect, which is a full carbon cable I think the 102smight be a little more palatable for him. At RM430 per metre pair, I recommend
it whole-heartedly to audiophiles out there who long for a pretty impressive
and neutral cable ...
"but at a price that won't make your wife freak
out!"

Hi-Fi Choice
Original Review from Hi-Fi Choice: Van den Hul D - 102
III HYBRID: A cable with everything: good bass, treble, imaging and
naturalness. Like SonicLink (and Audio Note, Isoda and a few others),
van den Hul has been instrumental in investigating conductors apart from the
usual copper and silver. The whole subject of conductor material is still wide
open to debate, but van den Hul felt that there was a common and undesirable
signature to all metal-conductor cables, so set about constructing cables with
carbon-fibre conductors instead. The D - 102 III HYBRID is one of these;
although it is, in fact, a hybrid, mixing carbon fibre with more conventional
silverplated copper. Construction is pseudo-balanced, with Teflon insulation.
Capacitance, dielectric loss and microphony are all low. Summarized Review
"Van Den Hul d-102 Mk III is a seemingly unbeatable analogue design
that’s suitable for anything from a phono stage to a SACD player and all points
in between. We found it hard to criticise this cable — detail is very good and
tonality is neutral across the board. Treble extension is exemplary which might
explain how it manages to create such impressive image depth and width. All
things considered, this is a first-rate performer and a bargain to boot" Awarded Product of the Year 2002-2003 Hi-Fi Choice *****

TECHIES' CORNER These cables are terminated in a semi-balanced configuration for regular domestic Hi-Fi use (also being able to carry coaxial and video signals). Not in a Balanced configuration which is nowadays restricted mainly for professional use with XLR and 1/4 inch jacks (for keyboards, instruments, mixing desks and other pro musicians' applications). Some pre 80's equipement had Balanced inputs and outputs, but very few companies use them now and if they do they are sure to let you know. Balanced terminations will not work with regular domestic Hi-Fi equipement. A wiring diagram for the D102 MKIII - ![]() - a dual core cable as opposed to the general mono core Hi-Fi fare, thus affording an opportunity for a variance in wiring. Van den Hul show the most effective variant, which is the way these cables are wired. These cables are also marked with directional stickers. The Ground End should go into the source (i.e cd player) and the other into your amp or whatever you are connecting your source to (DAC, Phono Stage, external CD Clock, valve stage...).
