This is a very rare stoneware spirit barrel that would have been made around 1863, I say 1863 because that is when J. Stiff took his sons into partnership with him, other than that I cannot be more specific, James Stiff was born in 1808 and died in 1897 and originally worked for Doulton & Watts as a mould maker before moving into his own premises in 1842 and setting up his own business, the business was eventually sold to Royal Doulton in 1913..........this barrel measures 10" and is approx 7" across at its widest point, apart from the cork having decomposed somewhat (this is the original cork and still has some of it left in the dispenser as can be seen in the photograph) there does not appear to be any damage to the barrel at all, no chips, cracks etc.......to the top of the barrel is the number 1 and the backstamp of J.Stiff & Sons, Lambeth London within a double oval, this is impressed into the stoneware..the main part of the body has what I would call a saltglaze type finish and the dark brown banding is raised.......not bad condition considering it will soon be 150 years old..............I haven't been able to find a price for any of his items apart from a pair of garden stoneware urns which fetched £2000 at auction..............this piece weighs in at almost 4kg's so will cost £9.30 to deliver though could be picked up locally should you wish to....................thank you for looking.........
