Pex B underfloor heating pipe is produced from cross-linkable, high density polyethylene resin. This cross-linkable resin is produced by grafting organo-silane molecules onto a base polyethylene chain. A catalyst that initiates the cross-linking process is blended with the resin before extrusion. Cross-linking is completed after extrusion by exposing the tubing to heat and moisture. Pex B underfloor heating pipe is recommended for hydronic radiant panel heating systems utilizing water or an antifreeze solution as the heat transfer media.

Tubing may be installed in concrete, gypsum based lightweight concrete, sand and in or under wood flooring or behind wallboard or plaster. Cross-linked polyethylene, as a material for distributing hot water up to 95°C, has been used worldwide for almost 40 years and has become the best-proven and the most widely used plastic for commercial and domestic installations of underfloor heating. 

Underfloorheating1 cross-linked polyethylene features a specific stabilization process that provides a higher resistance to various phenomena, such as the effects of copper ions, UV-radiation and chlorine in hot water systems.

An alternative, often cheaper, Pex-Al-PE underfloor heating pipe

The components of this underfloor heating pipe are Cross-Linked Polyethylene, Aluminium barrier, Polyethylene. Cross-Linked Polyethylene (PEX) undergoes a process in which additional unions between the polyethylene molecule chains are formed. This yields a material with much higher resistance to heat and pressure when compared to ordinary polyethylene.

Pex-Al-PE underfloor heating pipe has not had the inside layer of the pipe treated and it remains as standard Polyethylene.  When compared to a Pex-Al-Pex pipe the production process is generally shorter with subsequent production costs lower and this is often reflected in the final price.  However it can be argued the finished product is consequently not so durable. 

This type of pipe is generally manufactured in the Far East and often does not comply with European standards. 

There are known cases of air and water passing through inner PE pipe layer.  This in turn has formed a blister between the aluminium layer and the inner layer of PE pipe.  This blister slowly expands and the pipe delaminates.  The result can be a complete or partial blockage of the pipe.  The only cure is to dig up the floor and replace the pipe. 

PEX-b EVOH pipe does not use an aluminium layer.

It is manufactured entirely from PEX pipe and cannot delaminate.
