A collection of fighter pilot's stories, which is interwoven with examples of aviation archaeology. The famous fighter groups included in the book include the 4th, 20th, 36th, 55th, 78th, 339th, 352nd, 356th, 361st, 364th and 367th. It includes accounts of: a pilot's miracle survival story as his Lightning disentegrates and he cannot escape; how a young pilot died in his attempt to protect the daughter of a French family; a son's trip to a crash site to discover how his father died; how the finding of a pilot's silver wings unlocked a story of structural failure and swift oblivion; how a P-51 was blessed before take-off but still proved a demon to fly; how two P-51s tackled 200 enemy aircraft; and the letters from a young American training to fly, which were followed by silence and then murder.
