Those ladies wear reading glasses will be aware of the annoyance of peeping over the top to see in the distance, wearing them on a clumsy neckchain, or continually perching them on your head ( ruining your hairstyle in the process).   Men will likewise be taking them in and out of a top pocket or misplacing them somewhere.

All this inconvenience is a thing of the past now with the newest ones to arrive in the U.K.    They are designed with a plain top section (no magnification) and a small section at the bottom which is magnified for reading and other close work.

 This means that you can see perfectly in the distance, but still see in focus when you look down at close work.    Perfect for instance in the supermarket -- you want to read the food labels/ shopping list and then carry on walking without continually removing the specs!    Handy also in the office - dealing with paperwork but able to look round at colleagues,   Watching T.V and viewing the sky control,  Serving at a shop check out,  Reading recipes while cooking,   or even driving and reading a SAT NAV.   In fact once you have used these you will never again wear the traditional type.

Wear contacts? Many people still wear these bifocals over the top of their lenses to give their close work an occasional little boost, as distance vision remains uncompromised.
