Linux USB Flash Drives and SD Memory Cards come in three possible configurations:

• Live,

• Persistent, and

• Installed.

Live – The standard configuration for booting your computer and trying out the Linux operating system (OS). Can be used to install the Linux OS into your computer or into an external hard drive, USB flash drive, or SD memory card. Does not save configuration changes to the OS (themes, backgrounds, network setups, installing additional applications, etc.) session-to-session.

Persistent - Same as the Live, but does save configuration changes (themes, backgrounds, network setups, additional applications, etc.) session-to-session. Can be used to install the Linux OS into your computer or into an external hard drive, USB flash drive, or SD memory card.

Installed – The Linux OS is fully installed onto the USB flash drive or SD memory card device. Simply plug the device into your computer and boot your computer into the complete OS. Since it is already fully installed into a device, it can not be used to install the Linux OS into your computer or to another external device.

The flashdrive will be a Kingston or other name-brand USB flash drive (e.g. HP, PNY, Transcend, etc.).  Kingston memories are known for their HIGH-QUALITY and RELIABILITY.  Other brands, especially "off" brands, may not be as reliable.
