Henry Mancini's first major film score, TOUCH OF EVIL introduced generations of hipsters to the master's musical style, dispelling their mistaken notions that he was a mere dispenser of schmaltz. The movie is a classic, twisted film noir directed by Orson Welles and shot with what was particularly remarkable realism for the time. This is one of those rare early soundtracks where the entire score is "source music," that is, it's playing on radios or in club scenes instead of being overlaid in the traditional Hollywood way. TOUCH OF EVIL uses Mancini's deliberately seedy, slightly malevolent music to perfect effect. In particular, Mancini's use of traditional mariachi instrumentation (the film is set on the California/Mexico border) sounds like it inspired 1990s soundtrack mavens Calexico. TOUCH OF EVIL definitely influenced early British industrial experimentalists Cabaret Voltaire; their 1981 album RED MECCA uses themes from TOUCH OF EVIL throughout, helping bring a new generation of fans to the original work.
