Titanic  ~  Tobis/Universum Film A.G. (UFA), 1943. This is a lightly used PAL format VHS intended for European use. It is in German and does not have English subtitles. It is from my own collection and has been played just a few times. Virtually any VHS VCR will play this tape but North Americans must have a multisync television in order to correctly display the signal. The good news is that most recent TVs intended for the US or Canadian markets are multisync, but not all are. Check your TV manual or the maker's website. 82 minutes.

In 1912 the White Star Liner Titanic hit an iceberg and sank in the North Atlantic. Is there anyone who doesn't know the story? We have seen the various English language film versions of the disaster until they seem like real memories. This pre-viewed copy is in good condition inside a worn clam-shell case. It was not a rental!

This 1943 German film is something of a rarity in North America. It is both a refreshingly different dramatization of the events and an interesting story in itself. Although the film was made in Nazi Germany under the careful watch of the Propaganda Ministry, it was still banned by the Nazis. Director Herbert Selpin had been arrested by the Gestapo by the time the film should have premiered, and was dead. Selpin, it seems, was not especially enthusiastic about the Nazis and, in an moment of emotion, criticised the Wehrmacht and war effort. His screen writer, Walter Zerlett-Olfenius, turned him in. Although the Nazi official in charge of the production, SS-Obergruppenführer Hans Hinkel, tried to gloss over the incident, Goebbels expelled Selpin from the Reich Film Guild and had him arrested. Selpin committed suicide in his cell on August 1, 1943. The film was banned from being shown in Germany because it was not anti-British enough but it did have a world premiere in Paris on November 10th, 1943. It is even more odd that the allies perpetuated the ban on the film after the war was over preventing a German premiere until 1950!
