Times Past (Barn Owl) by Jeremy Paul

Dr. Jeremy Paul, to give him his correct title, trained as a marine biologist at Liverpool University, gaining a Doctor of Philosophy for research. He became a leading authority on shellfish farming, and his work in research and development has taken him to live in some of the most beautiful and wild areas of Britain - particularly the Highlands of Scotland. Jeremy spends many hours in the field observing, making sketches and notes, looking for settings and lighting that may inspire a painting. Not having had any training as an artist, Jeremy's love of nature provides his inner motivation to paint. It is because of this love of nature that he is able to recognize a potential painting, and convey to us the peacefulness of his scenes. His extensive travels throughout Britain. Europe, and North America, have given him ample subject matter, but he still spends as much time as he can out in the field watching and being part of his own special countryside. Jeremy's love of his subjects is portrayed in his eye for detail, and his exceptional talent for producing a painting that can be loved and appreciated by all. His work is in collections all over the world, and he has had several published as limited edition prints before. Now living on the Isle of Man, he has ample subjects from which to draw inspiration, and recently completed a commission from the Isle of Man government for presentation to world Formula One Racing Champion 1992 - Nigel Mansell.

The barn owl is approximately one year old, perched on a piece of old farm machinery studying a small tortoiseshell butterfly. As farming methods have changed, the old labour-intensive machinery has become obsolete. But also, these methods are destroying the barn owl's habitat, forcing it into decline to such an extent that it is now an endangered species. Jeremy's ironic portrayal of the demise of the old ways which in turn lead to the destruction of nature, is a poignant reminder of our need to support those creatures which are affected by our own short-sightedness. The original is in acrylics, size 16" x 24", kindly loaned to us by the Halcyon Gallery of Birmingham.
