| | Album notes | Although Candi Staton came to fame as a soul-deep R&B singer of the Muscle Shoals school, the Alabama native started in gospel, a style she has returned to full time in recent years. THE ULTIMATE GOSPEL COLLECTION is a two-disc, 31-track collection of Staton's more recent gospel work, which has all the R&B thrust of her great R&B and disco singles, but in an obviously less secular context. Her versions of Paul Simon's "Bridge over Troubled Water" and Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" turn both into full-on gospel rave-ups, while originals like "Too Late" drip with sanctified soul.
