Synopsis
"'This book is the story of an experiment,' to quote the author (p. 12). Focuses on myth as the key to understanding the Incas' past. Many conclusions differ from those of standard scholarly literature. Some examples that run counter to orthodox views on Andean peoples are the notion that Andean myth recounts significant precessional events; the view that the three worlds of Andean cosmology were understood, on one level, as locations on the celestial sphere, united by the Milky Way; and the idea that Andean peoples not only had names for all the planets visible to the unassisted eye, but also associated them with important deities. Uses ethnoastronomical studies of Gary Urton and R. Tom Zuidema"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58.
Sullivan argues that the key to the mythology and social structure of the Incas can be found in the belief held by their priest-astronmers that their world was soon to end in a great apocalypse. He further proposes that we understand Inca rituals of warfare and human sacrifice as an attempt to "Stop Time," to forstall the cataclysm that threatened the world as they knew it. This book presents his evidence for this extraordinary thesis.

Publisher's Note
At its peak, the Inca empire was the largest on Earth. Yet in the year 1532, it was conquered by fewer than 200 Spanish adventurers. How could this happen? Approaching the answer clue by clue, scholar William Sullivan decodes the myths of the Incas to reveal an astoundingly precise record of astronomical events. The Incas accepted their fate as written in the stars. Illus.

Industry reviews

Ad. - Graham Hancock

"William Sullivan documents the reality behind ritualized human sacrifice and the collapse of one of the world's most expansive empires."
