With music and lyrics by Lionel Bart, Oliver! first opened in London in 1960 and three years later saw the opening of a Broadway production. Based largely on the novel Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens, it was the first such adaptation and this was largely the reason why it attracted so much interest, although Lionel Bart's excellent songs were worthy of the interest.
Eight years later the musical became a film and would go on to win five Academy Awards, including Best Music Score of a Musical Picture (Original or Adaptation) as well as making stars out of two of the cast in Mark Lester and Jack Wild.
