Net als The Deer Hunter behoort The Boys in Company C tot de eerste films die de oorlog in Vietnam op een realistische manier in beeld brengt. De film wordt geroemd als de voorloper van Full Metal Jacket. Ook hier speelt Lee Ermey de rol van meedogenloze drilsergeant die een groep jonge mariniers klaarstoomt voor de oorlog. Eenmaal in Vietnam raken de jongens snel ontgoocheld door de doelloze gevechten, de corruptie bij hun Zuid-Vietnamese bondgenoten en de incompetentie van hun militaire leiders. Voor de jongens in Company C dient zich een unieke manier aan de oorlog te ontvluchten: een voetbalwedstrijd. Maar in Vietnam is niets zo simpel als het lijkt…
