These ancient dead-eyes come from the bottoms of the main mast shrouds of Sailing Barge Cambria, the last UK merchant sailing vessel to trade solely under wind power. Taken out of service in 1970 she was bought by the Maritime Trust and formed part of the museum fleet in St Katherine Dock. She is now being fully restored under a Lottery Fund grant at Faversham in Kent, and these dead eyes represent some of the more sale-able salvage and memorabilia which is coming from the old barge. Cambria had 4 shrouds each side, so there were 8, now only 6 available. The wooden eyes and the metal ring show good signs of age, and the wood carries several layers of old worn paint. They weigh just under 9 kgs, so posting will be pricey, or buyer can collect. For pictures of dead eyes in situ search "memorabilia" on the Barges tab of the www.kentishhoppers.org.uk website. |
