TERRY CALLIER I DON’T WANT TO SEE MYSELF (WITHOUT YOU) b/w IF I COULD MAKE YOU (CHANGE YOUR MIND) Cat number AJX 176S – 7” vinyl only
Extra rare. Limited Edition. Only 1500 copies pressed. Almost sold out. Stop press: Terry Callier has just recorded the guest vocal on the new Massive Attack single, out this month…awesome Acid Jazz Records - the undoubted home of soul in East London - are proud to announce the 25th anniversary release of Terry Callier’s crossover gospel soul classic I DON’T WANT TO SEE MYSELF (WITHOUT YOU) – available for the first time as a 7”. Back in 1991 Acid Jazz head honcho Eddie Piller spent four months tracing the soul folk legend Terry Callier. Callier had originally found fame with his masterful album ‘The New Folk Sound Of Terry Callier” on Chess, the massive northern classics of “Look At Me Now” and “Ordinary Joe” (recently selling at £450 on the issue) and the later jazz funk tinged crossover epics “Dancing Girl” and “Be A Believer”. It was a tough job finding him as following a change in personal circumstances, the Chicago based singer had retired from music, turned his back on the scene and declined all offers work. Piller’s persistence eventually paid off and Acid Jazz released a 12” version of the single that summer. Ten years earlier the original US-only issue had been released on small Chicago indie Erect, whose bankruptcy soon after meant that copies were scarce and by 1990 were commanding a heady £25. With the Acid Jazz reissue in 1991, the single received a whole host of interest from radio and the label brought Terry out of retirement to perform at London’s legendary 100 club. A number of demos followed and before long Callier was back releasing his unique brand of folk/soul. The rest, as they say, is history. New albums followed and Terry Callier at last took his rightful place amongst the soul pantheon. He can be heard, for example, on the new Massive Attack Single “Live With Me” released this March ahead of their Best of album. This 25th anniversary release sees the track cut down from it’s original 8 minutes to a delicious 3 minutes 50 of pure gospel soul – and for the first time released as a seven inch. The edit was masterminded by soul artist and DJ Andy Lewis and is limited to just 1500 singles in Acid Jazz house bags.
