THE THREE LAYERS OF YOUR SKIN:
The surface of the skin (known as the Epidermis) accounts for less than 10% of the overall thickness and provides a protective barrier that keeps moisture in and harmful matter out. Topical skincare products can enter only this layer and help to reinforce the skins protective properties, and to provide an immediate but temporary moisturizing effect.
The deepest layer (known as the hypodermis) is comprised primarily of fat cells. It connects the skin to the underlying bone and muscle tissue and supplies the skin with blood vessels and nerves.
The structural foundation of our skin is the middle layer, known as the Dermis. It is this layer that is responsible for the skins overall appearance, strength and elasticity, and health. Within this layer is a dense weave of collagen's, elastins, and reticular (moisture retaining) fibers. As we age, these proteins are depleted due to the constant attack from free radicals and the dense weave that holds the skin taught and firm begins to weaken. By the age of 45, most people will have lost an average of 30% of these essential proteins too attacking free radicals. Unfortunately, topical skincare solutions cannot penetrate deep enough to reach the Dermis so an internal solution is required.
