TIBOR translates to "Ted"in Hungarian (as in Ted Juracsik the company founder). In fly fishing, Tibor translates to "high performance reels built like tanks." As with most accomplished innovators, Juracsik saw a problem, (the lack of a substantial saltwater fly reel), and went out and solved it.
An avid saltwater fly fisherman, Ted began fishing Florida in the early 1960's. In 1970 he met Billy Pate and two became fast friends and fishing companions. By 1976, the melding of these two minds resulted in the Billy Pate Reel line. Changing saltwater fly-fishing forever. However, the Tibor story really begins decades before in Budapest, Hungary.
Born in Budapest, Ted Juracsik was raised fishing the Danube River. At 17 he became the youngest person ever to earn their Masterpapers in the Tool and Die trade. Shortly after embarking on his career he joined the Hungarian freedom fighters in their attempt to overthrow the Soviet Union. The revolt was unsuccessful, and for the benefit of the fly fishing world, Ted fled to the United States.
He lived in New York working for several tool and die companies. In 1961 he opened his own business and by 1976 he was manufacturing world class fly reels. The first line of reels Tibor produced was the Billy Pate Anti-Reverse series. These reels made the once impossible task of landing world-class saltwater fish not only possible, but pleasurable. The Billy Pate reels are still being manufactured today, the design is so sound that nothing has changed since their inception. To date over 20 world record fish have been caught on them.
Two-handed fly rodding gets a sure-handed Tibor update in this modern spin on one of fishing’s most hallowed traditions. Engraved with a Steelhead Trout and traditional Celtic knot pattern, the Tibor Spey reel features a modified drag system with a drag knob outlined in witness marks. These marks allow you to precisely set, loosen, keep track of and then reset your drag for the various tippet tensions required while striking, fighting and delicately landing larger fish.
The Tibor Spey also features the Tibor Quickchange which allows you to change out spools on a moment’s notice. With only a single moving part, the one-piece stainless steel end cap, there is nothing to remove, no loose parts, tricky threading or alignments.
Finished in non-reflective traditional MOSS GREEN, and featuring its own unique spool design that’s also available with a SpeedHandle option, the Tibor Spey is precisely weighted and balanced for the heavier lines and rods used in this classic form of fly fishing.
Tibor Reels are also a mainstay for Spey enthusiasts, delivering the ultimate balance, overall capacity and drag performance for the double handed rod.
As with all of Ted's reels, the drag system is absolutely flawless and has withstood the test of the world's most demanding game fish, including 234 World Records, so far. If you were to own only one fly reel, this is the one to have.
Ted Juracsik created his Constalube system witha drag composed of Jenvan felt and a special lubricant, TiborLubeTM, which presses against the reel's brake drum. This produces a system of continuous lubrication resulting in the smoothest drag ever designed in a trout-sized reel.
After each use, Tibor Spey Reels should be rinsed thoroughly in fresh water. To disassemble a reel for cleaning, the only tool required is a penny. All reels are lubricated at the factory prior to assembly and relubrication is generally not necessary. Tibor Graphite Lube may be used to lubricate the cork drag disc.
Tibor Spey QC Reels can be easily converted from Right Hand to Left Hand Retrieve by relocating the clutch dogs. Complete warranty, maintenance and conversion information is included with each reel.
All Tibor Spey Reels carry a limited lifetime warranty. This warranty covers the repair or replacement of any part due to defect in material or workmanship.
