St Jim's boys were not supposed to kick up a shindy under a master's study window -but in the excitement of a wild punt-about of a football in the quad, everyone had forgotten that. . . until Mr Railton put his head out of the window.

It was unwise to put a head out of a window at that time. It was also unwIse of Arthur Augustus D'Arcy to try using that window as a goal.

Once those two misfortunes had occurred, complications were bound to follow.

There was not only the loss of a football to make D' Arcy's life miserable: there was also, mysteriously, the loss of some money.

And then there was the strange behaviour of Orris, the house-porter . . .
