Content: This is a near mint condition 1992 1st edition of The Posts of Sevenoaks in Kent - Biggin Hill to Edenbridge, Westerham to Wrotham AD1085-1986 by Archie Donald.
Dust-jacket reads:
An Account of the handling and transportation of the Written Communication of Sevenoaks District. Biggin Hill to Edenbridge, Westerham to Wrotham on the Road to Rye and Hastings.
This book is an in-depth study of the handling of written communication in one particular area, concentrating on operational necessity and examining how nationally conceived 'general principles' were adapted and carried out locally, 'on the ground'.
There is much local material from Post Office Archives, Kent Archives and local sources never before published and it is hoped that the work may become a useful storehouse of social and local information. Events bind naturally into a continuous historical sequence but as far as possible each chapter is written as a vignette of its period, standing on its own and may be read separately. Illustrations are given to show how letters of each period looked and how they were charged for.
As well as movement along the Road from London first of all to Rye and later to Hastings, the book covers the expansion of the local network to Westerham and Edenbridge on the west side of the Town and on the east the route to Wrotham and up the Darenth Valley to Dartford. Developments to the north, Knockholt Halstead and Biggin Hill take the story through WWI and WWII to the present day.
Includes a wealth of local material from Post Office Archives Archives, Kent Archives and local sources never published before.
Lavishly illustrated with photographs, reproductions, illustrations & maps (of post offices, postmarks, plans & routes).
