LANCE ARMSTRONG
'SEVEN IN A ROW'
Lance Armstrong. Tour de France winner
1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005…
This sensational programme, featuring commentary by Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen captures one of sports most incredible achievements – Lance Armstrong's seven Tour de France victories.
In 1996 he was diagnosed with testicular cancer, a cancer that spread to all parts of his body and a cancer from which he was given as little as a 3% chance of recovery.
It is an amazing story of utter dominance. Armstrong's true comeback came in 1999, when he won his first Tour de France. His final lead times over his closest competitor have been over six minutes every year except for 2003 and 2005. In 2003, he finished 1:01 ahead of Jan Ullrich, following an unusual set of circumstances including a stomach illness at the outset of the race, and in 2005, he finished 4:40 ahead of Ivan Basso. In addition to his seven overall wins, he has won 22 individual stages (1993-1, 1995-1, 1999-4, 2000-1, 2001-4, 2002-4, 2003-1, 2004-5, 2005-1). He has won 11 time trials in the Tour de France; and his team has won the team time trial three times (2003–2005).
Featuring Lance's best action over the seven years.
This is a programme to be treasured by all sports enthusiasts.
DISC 2
LANCE THE MAN BEHIND THE LEGEND
Just five years after he took up competitive cycling, he was world champion. Three years later, he was fighting for his life.
Lance Armstrong became famous as an American athlete in a sport dominated by Europeans. But it was his highly publicised battle with cancer that made him a hero. 'Biography' follows the brash Texan from his angry childhood to his record-breaking sixth consecutive Tour de France victory in 2004, victories that were shared with cancer victims and survivors worldwide.
In probing interviews, Lance talks about how he fought the disease, while his mother, friends, teammates and rivals offer intimate insights into his personality, both on the race course and off it.
Interspersed with footage of his greatest victories, this is a moving portrait of an athlete who has fought back from the brink to transcend his sport.
DISC 3
The Science of
Lance Armstrong
THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE SUCCESS
“The Science of Lance Armstrong” is a fascinating look at the many behind the scenes efforts that play a crucial role in Lance Armstrong’s successes. In a race such as the Tour de France seconds count, indeed a mere second could be the difference between winning and losing. Thus if new technological advancements can shave as little as a second off Lance’s racing time, it’s worth doing!
This captivating programme introduces the viewer to the “F1 team”, the people who work around the clock, in the front line with Lance, or in the laboratories developing new ideas and strategies, that all go into winning races. The viewer is shown how adding a dimpled texture to a racer’s jersey can actually reduce the aerodynamic drag that is produced by the rider, allowing him/her to go faster. We meet Johan Bruyneel, the teams sporting director, who masterminds the tactics behind each race. And we meet Lance, the seven time Tour de France winner, who takes an active role in assessing every detail of the whole operation.
Including memorable footage from the Tour de France, “The Science of Lance Armstrong” is an adrenaline fuelled investigation into Lance’s incredible success.
