turner was one of the greatest of all british artists. by the age of 30 he was a member of the royal academy, but remained a gruff, secretive character renowned for meaness with money. although he travelled extensively, the thames riverside remained his home base for his whole life. when he died aged 76 he left a vast legacy of works.
