The evolution of the People's Republic of China is told in this spectacular song and dance production, 'Dongfang hong' or 'The East is Red'. Vast, solemn, and glorifying the progress towards Communist victory, this cornucopia of purposeful entertainment, ostensibly presented in the Great Hall of the People, is pre-Cultural Revolution propaganda at its most lavish.

This is an artistic masterpiece from the Chinese Maoist propaganda machine.

It basically tells us the story of the construction of the Peeople's Republic of China. From the early 20th century Chinese Empire, a puppet under the strings of the English, German and Portuguese Empires to the rise of communism and the defeat of the Kuomintang at the Civil War.

The play is divided into several acts. The first ones tell us how the Chinese people suffered under the burden of Western colonialism and how the Russian Revolution made the nationalist Chinese wake up. It then tells us the life story of Mao Zedong and the split between the Communist Party and the Kuomintang, eventually leading to the Civil War.


If you like propaganda pieces, especially if they are performed in the style of golden age Hollywood musicals, then this is a must have movie!

This is an incredibly rare find and a definate must have for all film buffs, especially those interested in propaganda, musicals, dance and Asian, particularly Chinese cinema and just rare, hard to find and obscure movies titles.

Main feature in Mandarin with English subtitles.
