Tamron is one of the top Japanese independent lens manufacturers, and this is a standard zoom lens for Minolta AF, Konica Minolta and Sony digital SLR cameras, including the original 5000, 7000 and 9000, all Dynax, Maxxum and Alpha models, plus the RD-175, Dynax/Maxxum 5D and 7D and all Sony Alpha DSLR models. It's compact and lightweight with close focusing and multicoated glass, and is in excellent condition, boxed with lens caps and instructions.

This focal length range is excellent for general use, covering everything from 28mm and 35mm wide angle, through 50mm standard to 70mm short telephoto/portrait. It's the ideal range to keep on your camera, suitable for a huge range of subjects. Angle of view 75-34 degrees on film cameras. The zoom ring is large and has a rubber grip for easy handling.

On the Konica Minolta and Sony digital SLRs the effective focal length range is 42-105mm, giving extra telephoto reach for free. Plus, the cameras' AS (Anti-Shake) and SSS (Super SteadyShot) features work with this lens, allowing you to hand hold at much slower shutter speeds than usual without camera shake.

Focusing is automatic or manual down to 0.7m (27.3 inches) at all focal lengths. The focusing ring is a decent size with a ribbed rubber grip to make it easier to use, and has a far smoother action than many AF lenses.

Auto diaphragm and full aperture metering, compatible with all exposure and metering modes (see below) with the exception of some ADI flash modes which require Minolta D lenses. Maximum aperture is f/3.5-4.5, and the lens stops down to f/22-27 for maximum depth of field. As usual, all aperture settings are controlled from the camera body.

Multicoated (MC) glass for reduced flare against the light, and increased contrast and colour fidelity. Optical construction is nine elements in eight groups for optimum picture quality. Standard 52mm screw thread for filters and other accessories. The lens is nicely built (in Japan), with a metal lens mount, smooth controls and none of the looseness or play which is common in AF lenses nowadays. It's very compact at around 65mm (2.6 inches) long on the camera at its smallest settings, and a lightweight 235g. Tamron model 159DM.

The lens is in fully working order, zoom and manual focus controls operate smoothly, and AF has been tested and works fine. The glass is in excellent condition with no scratches, bubbles, cleaning marks or fungus, but just the usual tiny specks of dust which won't affect the results at all. Cosmetically the lens is very nice and there are only minor signs of normal use (but not abuse), including some small signs of handling, and surface marks on the rear mount where it's been fitted to a camera, etc. The box is showing signs of age but complete, and the caps and instructions are in very good condition.

No dents, dings or deep scratches, the filter thread is undamaged, and overall it's in great shape!

All normal exposure modes work OK (including program), and all metering modes are suitable including multi-pattern and spot. Some ADI modes on newer bodies and flashguns require distance information from the lens, and these modes work only with Minolta D lenses. This doesn't cause a problem in practice as the camera switches to an alternative mode (such as pre-flash TTL) as required.

Minolta AF-fit lenses and accessories are NOT suitable for the Minolta manual focus models requiring MC and MD lenses, the APS-format Vectis cameras or the digital RD-3000 (though an adapter was available), or Dimage digital cameras.

Some independent lenses don't work properly on the latest AF cameras, but we've checked this one on a recent Minolta Dynax 5 (Maxxum 5) and a Konica Minolta Dynax 7D (Maxxum 7D) digital, and it works fine. Please contact us if you have any questions about compatibility with your equipment.
