USS INDIANAPOLIS

WWII AMERICAN HEAVY CRUISER

* Brand New - Genuine UK Stock *

The U.S. Navy heavy cruiser, Indianapolis, was commissioned at the Philadelphia Navy Yard on November 15, 1932. She holds a place in history due to the circumstances of her sinking, which led to the biggest loss of life at sea in the history of the US Navy.
On the opening day of the Pacific War, December 7, 1941, as flagship of Scouting Force, US Fleet, she was making a simulated bombardment near Hawaii. In March 1943, she became flagship of Admiral Spruance, Commander Fifth Fleet which consisted of Task Force 58 plus 130,000  troops. Leading the giant fleet, she participated in most of the major Central Pacific campaigns. In March 1945, she was bombed and returned to Mare Island for repairs.
After repairs, she delivered critical parts for the first atomic bomb to the US B29 air base at Tinian on 26 July 1945, she was in the Philippine Sea when attacked on 30 July 1945 by a Japanese submarine. The ship sank in 12 minutes. Of 1,196 crew aboard, approximately 300 went down with the ship. About 900 faced exposure, dehydration and shark attacks as they waited for assistance with no lifeboats and almost no food or water. The ship was not listed overdue and the survivors were spotted by accident four days later. There were only 317 survivors. Indianapolis was one of the last US Navy ships sunk by enemy action in World War II. She served with honour from Pearl Harbor through the last campaign of World War II, sinking in action two weeks before the end of the war, and earned ten battle stars.
Indianapolis sent distress calls before sinking, but the US Navy claimed that they were never received. Declassified records show that three SOS messages were received separately, but none was acted upon because one commander was drunk, another had ordered his men not to disturb him and a third thought it was a Japanese prank! The delay of the rescue mission led to the loss of hundreds of sailors. It has been stated that the Indianapolis sinking resulted in the most shark attacks on humans in history.
Captain Charles Butler McVay III, who had commanded Indianapolis since November 1944, survived the sinking, and was court-martialled and convicted of "hazarding his ship by failing to zigzag." Several things about the court-martial were controversial. Despite McVay's navy orders to "zigzag at his discretion, weather permitting." Further, Mochitsura Hashimoto, commander of I-58, testified that zigzagging would have made no difference. Admiral Chester Nimitz remitted McVay's sentence and restored him to active duty. McVay retired in 1949. Nevertheless he committed suicide in 1968, using his Navy issue revolver. He was discovered with a toy sailor in one hand on his front lawn. In October 2000, the United States Congress passed a resolution that Captain McVay's record should state that "he is exonerated for the loss of Indianapolis." Bill Clinton signed the resolution. Of the 700 ships of the US Navy that were lost in combat in World War II, McVay was the only captain to be court-martialled.
