The Print - PRINCE OF WALES
Shown off Tenerife, which was the first port of call.
Originally it was decided that there be ten ships in the Fleet, however,Prince of Wales was chosen to make the eleventh. One of the newest and most handsome of the Fleet, the Prince of Wales was built in 1786 on the Thames.
A three masted, two-decked ship of 350 tons, 103' long and 29' wide, she was a convict transport, carrying 49 female and 1 male convict.

The Series - THE FIRST FLEET
At the outset, the most difficult task of painting the First Fleet was not what to paint but what not to paint. With such a rich historical tapestry and so much story of that epic journey from which to choose, I had to edit ruthlessly.
I spent many hours researching the subject matter, using scetches and plan drawings made by those who sailed in the Fleet, and examining marine archives.
To my knowledge, the First Fleet has never been painted in its entirety. Certainly particular ships have been painted, although most artists using some licence have tended to paint galleons, which were in fact, ships of the previous century. This made my task particularly exciting and challenging.
The painting of the First Fleet took over fifteen months to complete. I believe that they are the most accurate representation of the First Fleet ever likely to be seen.
The Fleet consisted of two naval ships, six transports carrying convicets and three storeships. Eleven of the paintings concentrate on an individual ship at some stage of that long journey from Portsmouth, to Tenerife, Rio De Janeiro and Cape Town. The twelth painting is of the entire Fleet in Sydney Cove, with each ship in correct mooring position, as shown by early drawings.

ABOUT ERIC MCGRAFFIN
Born in 1947, Eric McGraffin spent his formative years in a small coastal town near the English Lake District in Cumbria. Growing up in this marine haven had a profound impact on him. The constantly visiting ships and the Irish Sea fishing trawlers stamped and coloured his life, drawing and painting became his early hobbies.
Eric McGraffin's style with oils is both dramatic and painstakingly accurate. He's a widely accepted, distinguised, technical marine artist, with a great affinity for his subject. He has established considerable renown for his ability to accurately research, reconstruct and portray marine events of histortical significance. Consequently, his work is in considerable demand but because of his insistence for absolute accuracy in his subjects, Eric's production is extremely limited.
