Beyond melodies and beats, a grooving soul or jazz tune has a life of its own - its groove. The effect is impossible to describe, you just know you can feel it, and a tune either has it or it doesn’t. As Duke Ellington said: “It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing.”
The late 60s to the mid 70s was a grooving golden age. Things got funky, it’s well known. And there were also more opportunities for artists to get funky on record in this era than there would be in the not too distant future. The music still had a direct line from bars, clubs and parties onto record. Through local and regional entrepreneurs, things that were hot could be given a shot - on at least some level - and there was no shortage of musicians, hustlers and businessmen willing to try.
Of course for every Curtis Mayfield there were a hundred Dawson Smiths and some of the tunes in this collection, the majority of which were originally released by independent labels, had little or no national impact.
Eventually many such labels, even those with illustrious histories like New York’s Scepter/Wand, would fall victim to the harsh economic conditions that characterised the period. In any case, the seventies was the last decade that the US music industry would allow such organisations to hold sway.
