Strelitzia reginae
"Bird of Paradise, Crane Flower"
Native to South Africa, this exotic plant can be found growing along side the riverbanks and clearing in the coastal bush.
A versatile, structual, evergreen perennial which is suitable for indoor use or for placing in your garden during the milder months. If grown in a container, it can be brought indoors during the colder, winter months and will bring an exotic feel to your home or conservatory.
It's stunningly beautiful, brightly coloured orange and midnight blue flowers emerge from a hard, beak-like sheath called the spathe. The spathe is placed at right angles to the stem, which gives it the appearance of a bird's head. Hence the name "Bird of Paradise or Cranes bill"
These flowers stand above the equally interesting, clump forming, green banana like foliage, at the tips of long stalks.
