The Street Markets of London by Mary Benedetta With 64 stunning full-page photographs by Bauhaus photographer Laszlo Moholy-Nagy John Miles Ltd., London, 1936 First edition Format: 8vo, with 201 pages and 64 photographic plates. Mary Benedetta offers a fabulous idiosyncratic account of London markets of the immediate pre-war period in London, complete with pen portraits of myriad characters that she encountered. Among the locations featured are Petticoat Lane, Farringdon Street, Caledonian Market, Brixton, Covent Garden, Berwick Market, Shepherd's Bush, Brick Lane, Billingsgate and Commercial Road. The book includes 64 full-page sepia photographs by László Maholy-Nagy. Aside from these trademark atmospheric and dynamic images, the legendary Bauhaus artist / photographer also contributes a short but fascinating introduction. A Hungarian, Moholy-Nagy spent five years at the Bauhaus having been appointed a master by Walter Gropius. He wrote two of the books for the famous Bauhausbucher series, which he co-edited with Gropius: Malerei Fotographie Film (Painting Photography Film) and Von Material zu Architecture (published in English as The New Vision). He stayed in London between 1935 and 1937 after the Nazis had forced the closure of the Bauhaus a year earlier. He went on to found the New Bauhaus in Chicago. The Street Markets of London is one of just three books Moholy worked on during his time in the UK. At the time of listing I also have another of these publications - Eton Portrait by Bernard Fergusson - for sale in another auction. Condition: An excellent copy. Original cream cloth lettered in red, generally very clean with a little mild discolouration entirely consistent with age. Internally it is very clean and bright and the Moholy-Nagy photographs are absolutely stunning. There is a bookplate and neat previous owner's inscription and no dustjacket. Charmingly, the original retailer's label is still present, showing that the book was originally sold by the famous Australian bookseller and publisher, F.W. Preece and Sons, Adelaide. A fabulously descriptive and visually stunning book much sought-after for its fascinating social history and truly ground-breaking photography. Don't miss this rare opportunity. © Text and photographs by room_606. Please do not copy either in full or in part. Payment and Postage Paypal is accepted and I do not add a surcharge to cover their fees. UK buyers only may also pay by cheque or postal order. If it's a cheque, please allow 7 to 10 days for it to clear. It may be possible for overseas customers to pay by other means such as bank transfer by prior arrangement. All buyers please make contact within 3 days of auction. Payment is required within 7 days. Non-payment All non-paying bidders are, without exception, reported to eBay. This is not for the sake of being vindictive, but because eBay charges retrospective fees calculated on the actual sale price of items and this money needs to be retrieved. Believe me it is becoming increasingly difficult to make ends meet on here as it is! Thank you for your understanding. Please refer to eBay's policy on non-payment for more information, including its ramifications for the bidder. If you have any doubts, please do ask before bidding. Condition of items Please note that, unless clearly stated otherwise, my listings are for vintage/antique objects and therefore, by definition, are not going to be in the same condition you would expect from a brand new item. Please be assured that I always endeavour to offer the most accurate description possible of the item's condition and take multiple illustrative photographs. Vintage electrical items Unless explicitly stated otherwise in the description, vintage electrical items are always sold in their original condition so should always be safety checked by a qualified electrician (in the country of intended use) before use. Returns Returns may be made, if reported within 7 days and by prior arrangement only, if a mistake has been made in the listing and the item is not as described, but for no other reason. Unfortunately, simple buyer's remorse cannot qualify and the cost of return postage is not included in any refund. Please don't hesitate to e-mail me to ask any questions not covered above; I always answer as quickly as possible. Thanks very much for taking the time to read this and best of luck with your bidding! |
