You are bidding on a beautifully made, accurate miniature reproduction carving by

Martin and Oliver Webb Fine Stone Miniatures.

The Winged Lion of St Mark, St Davids Cathedral, Lady Chapel.

This piece is new, it has a very attractive antiqued burgundy red finish and it has a green baize backing. The miniature has a hanging loop so can be displayed either hanging up, or as a desk/mantlepiece ornament and measures approx 4 and 1/8 inches in width. The miniature comes with an information label and card and is presented wrapped in tissue papaer inside a sturdy and attractive red box. This would make a lovely, unusual and high quality gift.

The design of this lively carving is both sensitive and imaginative, its execution exquisite; the work of an expert stone mason. Given that there were probably relatively few lions around St Davids in the early 14th century to copy, this is a magnificent piece of work, the loose folds of flesh on the lion's hind quarters and his heavy, powerful paws are just perfect - and did a carved lion's face ever look more leonine? This winged lion, the symbol of Saint Mark, is a carved detail above the sedilia on the south side of the Lady Chapel sanctuary and is carved from fine-grained Cambrian sandstone, quarried from cliffs south of the cathedral.

A sedilia is an ornate bench for the priest, deacon and sub deacon celebrating mass. This example was built between 1328 and 1347 by Bishop Henry Gower. The Lady Chapel was built in the early 13th century, remodelled by Bishop Vaughan in the early 16th century, then following almost two centuries of being roofless, was restored in 1901.

St Davids Cathedral

There has been a monastic building on the site of the present cathedral since St David, patron saint of Wales, founded a monastery in the 6th century. During the turbulent 10th and 11th centuries the cathedral was sacked by Vikings and Bishops Morgenau and Abraham were killed in 999 and 1080 respectively, indeed, between 645 and 1097 St Davids (then called Menevia) was destroyed 13 times. Hardly surprisingly no building from this period has survived. In 1115 King Henry I appointed Bishop Bernard (first Norman Bishop of St Davids) and in 1131 a new cathedral was dedicated. However, in 1181/2 Bishop Peter de Leia began rebuilding the cathedral in the Transitional Norman style (nave arcade arches round, triforium pointed), forming the basis of the present structure. Disaster struck in 1220 when the tower collapsed and again in 1247/8 when an earthquake caused extensive damage to the cathedral. At the end of the 13th century the Lady Chapel and Porth y Twr bell tower were added. In the early 14th century the energetic Bishop Henry Gower arrived and built the magnificent Bishop's Palace to the west of the cathedral. He also altered much of the cathedral's interior where he heightened aisles, added the rood screen, the lantern (middle) stage to the tower, the sedilia and tombs in the Lady Chapel and incorporated a Treasury and Chapter House into St Thomas's Chapel.

By the late 15th century the nave was showing signs of serious subsidence with the arcades leaning outwards as the inadequate 12th century foundations settled in the waterlogged site. To remedy this flying buttresses were inserted, the nave roof lowered and the present oak ceiling instated. The Reformation saw the desecration of relics and shrines and in 1648 lead was removed from the roofs, leaving the east end of the cathedral derelict. The organ, bells, stained glass and the medieval library were also destroyed. Towards the end of the 18th century the nave was again subsiding, so the west wall was rebuilt by architect John Nash. However, the problem continued and in 1862 architect Sir George Gilbert Scott began massive works to stabilise the, by now, unsafe tower and west wall, redesigning and rebuilding the whole west front. In 1901, Gilbert Scott's son, Oldrid, completed the restoration of the Lady Chapel, incorporating much medieval stonework. The final part of the cathedral left roofless in 1648 (the Chapel of Edward the Confessor) was re-roofed in 1920.

These individually finished collector's pieces are not available anywhere else - often not even on our own web site. These items we sell on Ebay (our "Specials' Shop") are often unique "one off" pieces, others are ones of only a handful made. All of the items we sell here are rarities and, as such, we hope will be of interest to collectors.

Our miniatures are exact and authentic reproductions of original carvings made with the permission (often at the request of) the relevant cathedrals, etc. All of the work, from research, photography, pattern making and production through to final packaging is done in-house by ourselves. Please be assured that you are buying a high quality piece of handmade workmanship made entirely in the United Kingdom by a small family business founded in 1983. Martin and Oliver Webb Fine Stone Miniatures. You might like to look us up on Google!

Please read the following stuff - boring I know, but important nonetheless.

Payment.

PayPal please. I regret that I am unable to accept cheques from banks based outside of the UK, or money orders, etc - they are desperately expensive, usually very slow and often unreliable to process. Neither do we release our bank details for electronic bank transfer.

Shipping.

Please note that whilst I will ship worldwide, the postage costs shown are for Mainland UK and Northern Ireland only. Please contact me for overseas postage costs (which are for air-mail only - surface takes forever). If you wish to verify or query them, please do so before bidding, afterwards is significantly too late! Varying weights of items and rates for different world zones mean that a standard price is impossible to quote. Please be assured, however, that postage costs are kept as tight as possible.

All packages going abroad are equipped with the required labels and declarations but Customs in some countries are sometimes less than swift and parcels may be delayed. In our experience parcels to Canada occasionally take anything up to an astonishing three weeks - every single one has arrived safely in the end, but often late. Sadly this is something completely beyond our control.

Great care is taken to ensure that all our miniatures are packed securely - they are not simply shoved in a jiffy bag. One of our customers commented: "Packed like nuclear waste"!

I am perfectly happy to combine shipping costs for multiple purchases and will hold pieces for a maximum of two weeks from completion of auction. Please contact me if this is the case.

Proof of posting is always obtained from the Post Office upon dispatch of packages.

Item damaged in transit.

In the event of a miniature arriving damaged, please contact me immediately. Wherever possible a replacement as close to the original will be substituted, but please note that since the finishes on these items are mostly of a One Off nature, an exact replacement with identical finish is not always possible. If the alternative pieces available are not to your taste, I am happy to refund your purchase and postage expenses, including the postage to return the faulty item to me with its original packaging. Returned items MUST be securely packaged and Proof of Posting obtained.

Unpaid-for items.

Items that remain unpaid-for will be relisted for sale after fourteen days where no contact has been made by the bidder. If there is likely to be a delay, please get in touch and arrangements can be made accordingly.

Communicate.

If you have any queries or problems, or would like more information, PLEASE get in touch, I am always happy to help.

Feedback.

Feedback is an essential part of Ebay buying and selling - we all rely on reading each other's track record. I ALWAYS leave feedback and would be extremely grateful if you would reciprocate.

Thank you very much for your interest in this item, please take a look at our other pieces. I hope that you might wish to add us to your favourite sellers list and revisit.
