SPARTA

Sparta is a medium sized town about 200 km north of Antalya and famous for production of Attar of Roses. Its reputation in the carpet world goes back to the early parts of 20^th century. In the 1920s, the Turkish Sumerbank, which later took control of weaving at Herekeh, established carpet factories to produce large quantities of carpets and rugs for export. These have cotton foundation and are apparently woven with the Persian knot. They utilised many old Turkish carpet designs, including `Large Medallion Ushaks`, `Lotto` rugs, `Bird` rugs and so on as well as medallion designs in the Persian Safavid style for weaving of these carpets.

They were very popular in Europe especially in England during the first half of 20^th century.
