"The Sunset Route"
The Scenic Wonders Of Arizona From El Paso Texas To Los Angeles California.
Consisting Of Twenty Five Beautiful Illustrations Of The Most interesting Views Seen Along The Route.
This is the description of the Guide from the first page by the Van Noy-Interstate Company.
"The illustrations shown in the following pages are all made expressly for this book from photographs taken by special artists of the most striking objects of interest, which abound to a remarkable extent along the Southern Pacific Railroad, between El Paso and Los Angeles. Great care was taken to select only such views as every traveller actually sees along the line, so that the book truly forms a panorama of scenic wonders which is unrolled every day before the eyes of those who make this trip. Everyone desires to secure souvenirs of the journey, and, knowing this, we have endeavoured to make this volume such a record of facts, and such a collection of beautiful, accurate and attractive views, that it will be recognised by all as the most appropriate and interesting souvenir of the journey. For sale only enroute on the trains on the Sunset Route, or through the Van Noy-Interstate Company, 292 Second Street, San Francisco, California".
It was published exclusively for The Van Noy-Interstate Company, which changed its name to The Interstate Company in 1922, when the Van Noy brothers sold their interest, having previously been called The Van Noy Railway News and Hotel Company untill 1917. So this book was produced between 1917 and 1922 and is in lovely condition for its age.
It is a Softback with brown and gilt lettering and vignettes with a central pictorially illustrated paste down of "Indian Head Mountain Arizona". It does show light edge wear and slight creases but the illustration is still beautifully clear and bright.
Internally unmarked, undamaged and tightly bound. The next two pages after the description given above are "Explanation of Views Illustrated" in wonderful detail. The following page shows a map of the USA with the "Southern Pacific Railway Lines", Sunset, Ogden and Shasta and connections.
A very hard to get hold of book in very good condition with no problems or excuses. A wonderful Historical and Social commentary of a way of life in the very early 1900's.
