CONTENTS: A complete 6 volumes set of this collection of Scottish ballads and songs, brought together by Robert Archibald Smith (1780-1829), a composer and collector. This set includes all 6 volumes, bound in 2. The works begin with a brief (8 page) introduction to Scottish music, before reproducing numerous works, with music for voice and piano. Writers are named where known, though this copy was owned by a clearly knowledgeable collector, as several unknown writers are pencilled in, both in the contents pages and at the bottom of some of the music pages.
The writers include Robert Burns (numerous works, including 'Again rejoicing nature sees', 'A rosebud by my early walk', 'When wild war's deadly blast was blawn' and 'Musing on the roaring ocean'), Walter Scott, Dr Hoadley, Sir J. Clerk, John Anderson, Robert Allan, John Hamilton, Dr Webster, Mrs Cockburn, John Sim, Ettrick Shepherd, Jean Adam, Jean Glover, the Reverend Charles Wolfe, John Crawford, Lady A. Barnard, John Grieve, Robert Glassford, and Alexander Ross.
There is some sunning to the pages and scattered dirt spots, but all the music and lyrics are complete and clear, and the 6 parts are beautifully bound in handsome green morocco, with gilt decoration to boards and spines (5 raised bands to the spines), and marbled endpapers, with gilt decorated edges to the pastedowns, and gilt top edge to each volume.
A handsome and rare complete work, of great interest to music collectors. |
