What is Sky+?

Sky's hype about their Sky+ box is that it will 'change the way you watch TV'... and for once, the hype isn't wrong.

Sky+ is a combined satellite TV receiver and a Personal Video Recorder (PVR), which records up to 40 hours of TV onto a built-in hard-disk, as opposed to video tape. This gives you a huge amount of control over how you watch TV.

With Sky, you can:

ü  Watch one channel while recording another

ü  Record two different channels at the same time, while watching a recorded show

ü  Browse through a week's worth of TV with the on-screen programme guide, selecting which shows to record

ü  Select recordings from your Sky Planner and copy them off to a video or DVD recorder

ü  Follow a series - The excellent 'Series link' can be used to record episodes of your favourite series automatically

ü  Pause live TV - handy for when the phone rings

ü  Rewind live TV if you missed a piece of the action

The Sky+ box really is a top offering - you'll find you change your TV watching behaviour - no need to worry about setting the video recorder to keep up-to-date with a series, and with the drive holding around 40 hours of shows, no more running out of tape.

You also find you can stagger your watching - less more programme clashes, and using Live Pause means you can fast-forward through adverts. Sky+ was recently awarded top of the PVRs in a PVR survey conducted by a leading UK consumer organisation.

This sale includes the following version of Sky+ Box:

Sky+ 160GB (80GB Personal Storage) – Now officially and colloquially referred to as Sky+, this third generation of box (PVR3) are manufactured by Altech UEC, Pace, Amstrad and Thomson. Launched in September 2005 as standard Sky+ box, the box has an average of forty hours recording time. The drive has a 160 GB hard drive installed, however half of this (80 GB) is reserved for use by the Sky Anytime TV service. The box is known internally at Sky as a PVR3 or Sky + 80/80.

Although the different generations of Sky+ box look similar, they have minor external differences (viewing card positions etc.) and significant internal differences. By December 2005, Sky+ 80 GB boxes manufactured by Pace, Amstrad and Thomson were being installed. Many people have reported various problems with the different boxes. A persistent complaint is that early Amstrad 80 GB models are noisy in operation. The Amstrad models also reportedly display a more jerky image when in 30x fast forward and rewind. According to many posters on DigitalSpy the Pace and Thomson variants are preferred. However, other posters maintain that the reliability of all makes is statistically similar and that there are good and bad boxes from all three manufacturers.

Sky Anytime

Sky Anytime is available on newer Sky+ boxes and Sky+ HD boxes. This service makes use of extra disk space on the newer Sky's hard drive, and downloads a selection of Sky's content and movies to the box while the box is idle. These shows can be viewed on demand.

Shows delete themselves after a number of days, to free space for other Anytime programmes. If you want to keep an Anytime show, you can use the 'R' button to move it to your standard recordings list.

Sky Anytime is not available on older Sky+ boxes (the early models had smaller hard drives). Sky Anytime is a free service for Sky+ / Sky+ HD subscribers.
