Yet, partially due to the restrictions placed upon the equipment, and mainly due to the men working the throttles, the jet-driven entries are perhaps the most competitive of any class conceived...........For a lot of reasons Mel Bacon is ready to apply for a permanent visa as the American Power Boat Association's US #1 Ski Jet II shoe............Bacon set the then astonishing pace of 74-plus miles an hour in the Kilos, a new world's record.  1974 was a banner year...and at the end of the season, Bacon received his biggest moment thus far in the sport-he was named Rookie of the Year."
