Set 12 Antique Wiltshire Bronze Ox Bells Gong Door Bell

Description:
This is the most fabulous and impressive 19th Century set of twelve Wiltshire ox bells mounted on an oak hinged frame, the ox bells made from bronze set in lovely leather fringes with brass stud work, on an iron frame which, in turn, is mounted to a hinged oak frame with a handle at the base so that the bells can be used as a door bell or gong.  The bells originated from the "Ancestors of the Shelmerdine Family" bearing a note "These are oxen bells used originally on individual oxen as a means of identification.  The belong to my family who generations ago farmed in Wiltshire.  They have been set as a gong for many years and are of a constant source of interest to others.  A tune can be played on them by those with enthusiasm".  A fascinating item full of rural history.  The bells bear the founders marks "RW, RWE and RWELLS"

We are informed that sets of bells such as there were also attached to the hames of heavy horse teams to warn of their approach.

Date:
The bells date from the 19th Century.

Condition:
The bells are all in very good condition, the oak frame being a 20th Century invention to mount the bells.  There is a later handle to the top, the leather work being in good but worn condition.

There are a number of 4.25 inch bells (10.7cm) - also 4.875 inch bells (12.5cm) and other various sizes.
