CONTENTS: '... including general considerations on morbid states of the digestive organs, some remarks on regimen; and practical observations on gravel.'
Scudamore's work focuses on such ailments as gout, and rheumatism, both in their acute and chronic conditions. He also provides discussion of prophylactic regimens, and retrocedent gout.
Scudamore also notes the peculiar stigma attached to gout by both medical opinion and the popular view of the day; writing in his introduction 'every day's observation demonstrates, that whilst impositions of quackery are recieved by gouty persons with the fondest credulity, the art or regular medicine is treated with indifference, or even rejected: so powerfully does an unknown agent affect the imagination and indispose the mind to the excercise and the more sober facility of judgement.'
First published in 1816, this was the first monograph to be published in English on rheumatism and its aligned diseases. Sir Charles Scudamore (1779-1849), dedicates his work to Dr. Matthew Baillie.
Chapters include: Acute Gout, Chronic Gout, Retrocedent Gout, Appendix of Experiments, General Considerations of Morbid States of the Digestive Organs, Theory and Treatment of Gravel, Of Prophylactic Regimen, Comparative Experiments on Digestion by mr. Astley Cooper, Rheumatism, Chronic Rheumatism.
Laid in is a short typed letter to Dagnall from Gerard Rodnan, Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, dated September 14, 1973. In it he writes, "I agree with you that the booksellers have run amok. I find it hard to believe that anyone, even Texas oilmen, can keep up with them nowadays." Well, we hope at least you will find this copy reasonably priced!
An interesting and important work, well-preserved for its age, and in collectable condition.
[This book comes from the private collection of chiropodial and podiatric literature amassed by eminent chiropodist J. Colin Dagnall. His collection was one of the largest of its kind in the world.
Colin Dagnall trained at the London Foot Hospital in the late 1940's, and spent almost 50 years in private practice. Editor of the British Journal of Chiropody for many years, he was also an active member of many of his profession's governing bodies.
Many of the books contain the doctor's bookplates and private library cards, inscriptions from and to other prominent figures in the profession, and loose ms. notes. Where appropriate, we have noted these in the description, and left all such ephemera in situ as it came to us.
