Scarborough's Map of the World: 1909 showing Steamship routes. Colour on Linen
Published in London dated, copyright 1906. 1907, 1908, 1909
Double sided coloured wall map on linen approx 100cm x 100cm, attached to metal rollers. North America is on one side of the map Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia on the reverse. There is an extensive gazetteer down each margin and at the top and bottom there is detailed information on population, shipping lines and other information including consulates and military details
The plethora of steam shipping routes is shown in detail. Route 51 is that of the White Star line taken by Titanic a few years later, well north of the ‘extreme limit of icebergs’ shown on the map. The major overland routes are shown too.
The condition of the edges of the map is poor with large tears and splits especially at the bottom (USA side – this is the top of the Europe/Africa side). There are also water stains along either margin. The Europe side is somewhat faded but the USA side is cleaner.
I have tried to reflect the condition of the map in the pictures. Please email if you want some more pictures.
Despite its condition this map is of great interest. A later version is held in McMaster University’s collection of rare maps.
The map weighs 600g - will be well packed and can dispatch worldwide, have quoted for international surface mail (up to 28 days) in listing.
