Description: An exquisite maritime scene watercolour on artist's paper, signed "S. Owen" and dating circa 1800 - 1820. Framed - approx 22 X 18 inches (55.88 X 45.72cm). This is an exquisite English School watercolour dating from the Georgian period. The maritime scene depicts a stunning miniature watercolour of 19th Century figures and fishing boats on the quayside. Beautifully executed with minute detailing, this busy port depicts figures on the sand, unloading baskets of fish ready for market. One figure wades across the shallow waters toward a boat with the days catch. Other old vessels crowd around the harbour walls, colourful sails unfurled, fishermen busy about their business. The distant coastline fades into the distance, beneath a blue clouded sky. The work is signed "S. Owen" lower left for "Samuel Owen".
Date: The watercolour probably dates to around 1800 - 1820.
Artist Biography: "Samuel Owen" (British 1768 - 1857) Listed artist of picturesque views around the coast of Britain - prints/etching in the Tate collection.
Framing: Later ovolo moulded Gesso work. Finish: Gilt. The watercolour is mounted on board and has a off-white mount.
Condition: The painting has discoloured with age, as is to be expected and consistent with authenticity. The main features of the painting still hold good colours, having a couple of signs of foxing to parts of the sky area. The later frame and mount are in good condition.
