Sweet Basil – True Italian Basil (Ocimum basilcum)

Grow as a half hardy annual Healthy eating – Aromatic leaves ideal for Soups, stews, Pizza, pasta and salads .Basil is a great starter herb for beginner growers. It is easy to grow, as long as it is kept warm and sheltered, and tastes delicious.
  • Sow Indoors – late winter to early summer.Sprinkle seed thinly in a small pot, 5cm diameter [roughly 5 seeds per pot] Cover seeds with 6mm (¼ inch) sieved compost and place in a warm spot. Keep watered and weed free.
  • When the seedlings emerge place in a warm and light spot. Roughly a week later remove / prick out the weaker of the seedlings leaving just three plants per pot.
  • Can also be sown thinly direct outside at a depth of about 6mm ( ¼ inch )
  • Germination 14-21 days
When the plants have more than 5 ‘true’ leaves transplant them to their final positions  If planting outside wait until all frost risk has passed and space the plants 23cm (9inch) apart (approx  Late spring / early summer) Or pot up into larger pots (10cm) and place on a sunny windowsill or greenhouse bench.

Harvest - Summer through to Autumn – Do not allow plants to flower if leaves are required/used for cooking

The main requirement of Basil is plenty of sunshine .It will thrive outside as long as it is sheltered from harsh winds and gets plenty of light. If you can’t guarantee warm, sunny conditions it’s best to grow basil indoors or in a pot [that can be moved if the weather gets harsh]
When the plant has reached a good size (roughly 10cm tall with plenty of leaves), pinch or cut the leaves off as required. Avoid chopping whole stems from the plant; this will weaken it and hamper its growth. Remove any flowers that appear; this will enable the plants to concentrate their energy on growing tasty leaves.
