 Rosewood

An item which would be owned by every Victorian Lady , or even young girls was the sewing box. Embroidery was the vogue, dresses were made not bought, socks were darned not thrown away. The middle classes even had sewing parties or embroidery parties where they would visit each others homes and sew and gossip !.

Of course they could not do this unless they had a box which was up to the standard of their friends, hence fine boxes were produced with style and elegance.

This is one of them. Veneered in well figured rosewood, magnificent inlays of MOP, gadrooning to the top edges ..... top of the range.

It has been used for 150 years so the interior is not something you would expect from the High Street. It is just about complete in red silk, note the intricate pewter "bobbling" to the top of the tray sections. There is a pull down flap to the inner lid to hide love letters of course !

The overall condition is good, there is a tiny section of inlay filled, and some old surface scratches to top, although these are not "felt" when smoothing the item.
