SUPERB ANTIQUE FRENCH CHATEAU BEDCOVER SILK LACE c1850

This divine antique French chateau bedcover dates from the mid 1800s and is without doubt one of the most delicious handworked textiles I have found in a long time. A fine mixture of silk brocade worked with gold wire threads, lace borders and lace embellished with gold wire thread it must have been an absolute labour of love.

It would be the most amazing boudoir embellishment in any period home and to be truthful I was very tempted to hand it behind a bed headboard as a wall hanging as it is simply stunning.

The condition of the cover for its age is wonderful and the colours are softly muted with the passage of time.

The central silk brocade panel features tumbling flower blooms in an urn. Against a soft classical blue background the design is worked in soft rose pinks  and greens with very pale bronze gold wirework threads. This and the smaller silk panels throughout are backed with fine netting lace.

Immediately surrounding the central silk are borders are piped lattice lace embellished with gold wire thread.

There are finer lace borders with flower blooms and acanthus leaf scrolls.

The smaller silk brocade panels carry ribbon garlands, acanthus leaves and rose blooms in pale pinks and gold wire threads.

The two long side edges are scalloped and finished with gold wire thread borders making it all good and strong.

All of the lace is in wonderful condition , strong and solid with no tears or wear.

I can find a little distressing to a couple of the smaller silk brocade panels and one small repair. To be honest this is commensurate with age and does not detract as the cover is so amazingly decorative. These panels however and strengthened bu the wirework in the brocade so are all still quite strong. The remaining silk is sold with no deterioration of the fibres.

At the top and bottom edges are a narrow border of netting lace. The bottom panel ( see last pic) has a small hole within and could be repaired.

The cover is heavyweight and very substantial as befitting a high quality chateau embellishment.

The cover measures:

Length 7 feet 6" (229cms)

Width 7 feet 9" (236cms)
