REVIEW BY ADRIAN KK KICKSA motet is a short piece of choral music, and there is therefore some serious misdirection going on if you picked up this fantastically fucked up explosive rush of metal, gypsy, folk, jazz and thrash expecting some Latin hymns. However, the album does share a spirituality with the traditional motet, as the tunes descend, trance like, onto your ears. It’s not only of the mystical, epic, bluesy rendition of the traditional American hymn 'Will the Circle be Unbroken' that sucks you in and causes your whole upper body to sway in time with its funeral beat. The whole opus carries a groove that is so utterly hypnotic, were it not for the volcanic changes in pace, volume and arrangements it would be easy to enough to miss the changes between songs. The band have poise and patience; nothing is ever unintentionally rushed; they don’t mind playing a 3 minute long heavy, threatening, instrumental build up in order to cut to a gypsy swing with lyrics that make Captain Beefheart sound sane: “retro-octopus monocle and a hat/The shoulders ripple on the big sarcastic cat.” They also play their fade outs – now that’s dedication! they can also rock on something gorgeous, switching from Parisian accordion to Mettalic style solos in a blink and building to beautiful, life affirming mosh pits inducing break outs. The vocal style will draw obvious comparisons with Tom Waits, being jazzy as well as gravely, and has the inherent menace necessary to fill out lines such as “You don’t fear the dark…./But you will…” When they aren’t being intelligent, inventive and witty that make sure they don’t forget to deliver some rocking tunes. 'What Hangs From The Butcher’s Hook?' begins like the film score to some slick crime caper before heading into distinctly more Delicatessen territory with guitar FX that would do Tom Morrello proud. In fact there’s more than a couple of guitar lines that give praise at the altar of Rage Against The Machine but that’s never, ever, a bad thing. It’s an explosive, violent, unforgiving tune, that, after a brief squirl of noise, leads into 'Burlesque'. With it’s circus swing it draws you in before bludgeoning to death with some nightmarish breaks and down right dirty lines (“Lots of half naked girlies doing things to please me”) accompanied by demonic cackling as the singer rails against himself and temptation. It’s every childhood “It” bad dream come true. Insanity and precision, too opposing forces, battle over this album. The musicianship is absolutely spot on, though they do have a few Lightning Bolt moments, particularly on 'Dead Pigeon Teachers', where they essentially play final flourish style fills and squeals for most of the number as the singer mutters and yelps in tongues. For about 2 minutes though we are treated to the sparse diet of heavy breathing, cymbals and bellowed vocals that sound like they were recorded in the world’s largest (empty) prison cell. It is the sound of a man coming to terms with reality and fear, and not liking either very much. TRACKLISTING1. Grand Mal 2. Muleta 3. Brand New Loafers 4. Will The Circle Be Unbroken 5.
