This crucifix came out of a large collection where the original collector died over 30 years ago so, there is no way of telling the age of this crucifix. When the collection came into my possession, this crucifix was valued between $30,000 and $40,000 six years ago. There are 6 square cut rubies mounted in gold, probably 14 – 18 Karat. As you can see in the bottom photo, the rubies are clear, without imperfections or impurities. The gold mounting was designed to let light pass through, showing the rubies' beauty. There is a probable marking on the cross piece on the back side but, it is unreadable with a 3 power lupe. The markings, if they are markings, might be read with a higher power magnification. This crossbar seems to serve no other purpose, appearing to have been soldered in place post-construction of the rest of the gold frame. This cross is truly elegant in its simplicity and beauty. The highest valued crucifix in the collection, it would most likely be overlooked because of its simplicity. There is an accompanying chain complimenting the crucifix. And the crucifix is in original condition, not repaired or altered. Understandably, for a purchase of this magnitude, the purchaser will likely want to have an independent appraisal which is perfectly fine. An agreeable time, method and appraiser can be agreed upon. The measurements are approximately 7/8" across X 1 1/4" deep X 1/8" thick.
A very elegant gift or a "gem" of a collector's item. CR 4 On Jan-23-07 at 12:59:35 PST, seller added the following information:
