Background: The strawberry tree is not the same as the strawberry vine where we get delicious summer time fruit. Instead, the strawberry tree has fruit that doesn't taste good on its own. However, the fruit can be made into liqueurs. The leaves of the tree serve the medicinal purposes of an astringent and an antiseptic.
Applications: Antiseptic/Astringent
The strawberry tree is primarily used as an astringent.
Urinary tract: Strawberry leaves can be used to treat urethritis and cystitis.
Diarrhea: Strawberry tree leaves can be used to treat diarrhea and the more severe dysentery.
Sore throat: Strawberry tree can be used as a gargle to treat sore throats.
Description: The strawberry tree is native to the Mediterranean region of the world and is an evergreen shrub. The plant can grow as tall as 20 feet and the leaves are gathered in summer for herbal medicine.
Dosage: As a tincture, take 1-2 ml 3 times daily.
As a decoction, add 1/2-1 tsp dried herb to 1 cup boiling water. Simmer for 10-15 minutes. Drink 3 times daily.
Safety: Do not take this herb if you are pregnant or have problems with kidney disease. Consult your health care provider before beginning use of any herb.
