Top Tips

Casting techniques

Step 1 – open the bail arm. Gently pinch the line against the rod handle with the forefinger.

Step 2 – begin the cast by aiming at our target. Start by holding your rod at the 2 o’clock position

Step 3 – with the lure or bait dangling about 6 inches from the rod tip, lift the rod using a forearm action to the 11 o’clock position. The momentum of the back cast will bend the rod backwards. When the rod reaches maximum flex, begin the forward cast.

Step 4 – as the rod reaches the starting position, release the line by straightening your forefinger.

Step 5 – follow through the cast by lowering the rod tip to a point directly at the target as the line flows from the spool. Then retrieve the line and turn the handle in a clockwise direction.

Tying the hook

Step 1 – feed the line through the eye of the hook and wind the line around itself about 5 to 6 times.

Step 2 – pass the line back through the first loop in the line.

Step 3 – carefully and evenly draw the knot tight and trim off any excess line tag leaving about half of a centimetre to allow any slippage in the knot.

Hooks & baits

Step 1 – use a hook size that is suitable to the size of the bait that you are using

Step 2 – always remember that you can catch big fish on small hooks but it is very hard to catch smaller fish on big hooks.

Step 3 – use a sinker that will suit the prevailing conditions. Remember that we are not trying to anchor a boat, use only enough weight to hold the bait in position.
