The Archangel Michael is considered canonical by the Church, alongside Gabriel and Raphael, and is the one painted most frequently. For the Cuzco painters Michael was known as the Captain of all the Santos Angeles, the Caudillo y Capitan of all, the defender of the Church, intercessor of mankind, Principe de la Corte Celestial (Prince of the Celestial Court), who received the soul of the elect. For the faithful, Saint Michael Archangel was a protector and a willing listener. Saint Michael Archangel is an exquisite example of several characteristics of the Cuzco School; the plumes on his helmet, the beautiful coloring of the wings, and the stenciled patterns in gold that enliven the surface of the garments and armor of the angel. His regal, exquisite brocade gown is embellished with bronze leaf. This addition of stenciled or painted gold leaf onto oil paintings is called, as it was in early contracts, brocateado. It is also sometimes termed sobredorado (overgilding) and has also been described as escarchado. Look at the exquisite facial features and the color composition, it is just simply amazing. The history of the Peruvian painting has its origins at the colonial era.
