SPUTNIK 1 Brief Space History
On 4th October 1957, Sputnik 1 was launched from the Baikonur Launch Site, using the Launch Vehicle R-7 (The world's first ICBM).
Sputnik 1 became the first artificial satellite of the earth. Sputnik 1 had 1 watt of power, producing an 0.4 second duration signal on the 7 and 15 m bands. Four antennae were deployed at 35 degree angles. Power was provided by three silver-zinc batteries. Thermo-regulation was by a ventilator. The 580 mm sphere had a mass of 83 kg and was made of highly polished Aluminium AMG6T alloy 2 mm thick.
The SPUTNIK 1 satellite transmitted signals for 21 days. Making a physical study of the atmosphere; it remained in orbit until January 4, 1958. This event began the space race by galvanizing interest and action on the part of the American public to support an active role in space research, technology, and exploration.
MODEL DETAILS
This model is miniature (1/100th Scale), but a beautifully crafted and painted model. The accurately painted glass Earth globe is a lovely representation that sits securely on a recessed plinth base, with a transparent curved rod suspending Sputnik 1 above the Earth.
This is one model from a collection of 8 that were available from Volume 1 of the Royal Museum of Science - Startales collection (released in 2003 and deleted soon after release). These models were available at the 18th Planetary Congress of the Association of Space Explorers (A.S.E.) in Tokyo 2003.
These models were a joint project between the model producers KAIYODO and were marketed and sold by TAKARA. Two more volumes of ROYAL MUSEUM of SCIENCE MODELS were issed in 2003 and 2004. These realistic Space Exploration models have proved extremely popular in Japan and were quickly sold-out after their releases.
BOXED MODEL CONTENTS and DETAILS
The model is brand new and individually sealed in it's original plastic blister pack and boxed. The box has been carefully opened in order to identify which model was inside. The models are sold randomly and "blind" packed, therefore the box must be opened to discover the exact contents.
The packaging includes a full colour collectable space exploration backing photo card, with various factual information in the Japanese language. There is also included a fold-out A4 poster/information sheet with lots of details about SPUTNIK 1 (in Japanese), including photographs, factual cartoons, and full diagramatic Assembly Instructions for the model. This is a most impressive Space Exploration model with associated collectable ephemera.
